NewSpace startups launch YEESS initiative

On September 15, 2021, the new initiative announced its foundation and the intentions behind it at the Space Forum Luxembourg. On the one hand, it wants to advocate for transparency and balance in public contracts in space. In addition, direct interfaces for young space companies with European institutions are to be created. YEESS also wants to help with the allocation of resources. In addition, mutual trust is to be created and the development of the members is to be promoted.

A joint press release states that YEESS aims to become a representative platform for new space companies in Europe and to drive developments. The founding members are from Belgium, France, Germany and Spain. The six companies that have joined the initiative so far - Aerospacelab, Anywaves, ConstellR, Exotrail, Pangea Aerospace and Salantis - are to be joined by others in the coming weeks. YEESS is expected to grow to more than 30 members by the end of the year.

The objectives of YEESS

The initiators want to support the competitiveness of European space travel. Another essential point is to build trust between European institutions and NewSpace startups. This is because public-sector clients are often important as anchor customers in helping a young company gain the reputation it needs for its subsequent business activities. The mutual trust is then to be transferred to private and commercial customers as well. According to the press release, this is achieved, among other things, through:

• Raising awareness among European institutions, which are the first customers for space-related projects and programs, with regard to the potential of young companies to offer innovative and cutting-edge solutions and services
• Advocate for transparency and balance in space public contracts where any existing YEESS company employment is a fair share of the sector's total employment and contract volume
• Requesting these institutions to organize direct interfaces and their contractual relationships with young companies in the same way as they do with old companies
• Affirm the willingness of young companies to compete with incumbents on the same procurement measures
• Indicate the willingness to contribute in this way - individually and collectively - to an innovative and agile space sector in Europe.

YEESS - registered association, open to all space companies

YEESS (Young European Entreprises Syndicate Space) is a registered association recognized in Belgium and open to all young space companies. The prerequisite is that their foundation must be more than two years but less than 10 years old at the time of joining. They must also have their headquarters in a country of the European Union or an ESA member state. The official presentation of YEESS to the EU institutions is scheduled for Q4 2021.
